Beginnings of the City
The area of Cumming, GA was inhabited by Cherokee tribes around 1755.
Around the same time, the Battle of Taliwa took place between the Cherokee and Creek people which started over a hunting dispute.
The battle lasted for two years and ended with the Cherokee winning the land and the Creek people moving south of the Chattahoochee River.
Not long after, white settlers came to the area and the Cherokee coexisted with them until 1828 when the settlers discovered gold in Georgia.
New settlers rushed to the area and insisted that the Cherokee get removed from the area, which resulted in the Treaty of New Echota in 1835, forcing the Cherokee Nation to move to the Indian Territory.
Cherokee County was later formed in 1831 and in 1832, the county was split into several counties, one of which was named Forsyth County.
Cumming was formed in 1833, which consisted of two 40-acre land lots. These lots were issued by the Georgia State Land Lottery in 1831 and bought by several Forsyth County Inferior Court justices.
A post office was established in 1834 and people were able to buy smaller lots over several years after the townland was divided into smaller areas by the Inferior Court.
Eventually, Cumming was incorporated into the City of Cumming and became the official government seat of Forsyth County. The city started to follow the mayor-council model of government from 1845 onwards.
