In 2005, a citizens committee was formed and State Rep. Jan Jones introduced the bill for incorporating unincorporated northern Fulton County. The intent was to move the bill forward in 2006 so that the residents have a full year to consider the results of cityhood. The committee worked hard to help coordinate information and research. Finally, the city of Milton was founded in March 2006 after the Georgia State House and Senate approved the bill. The bill was signed into law in July 2006 and 86 % of voters supported the City of Milton referendum. The name Milton was given in honor of Former Milton County, which was named after John Milton, a Revolutionary War hero.
Milton is bounded by the cities of Roswell and Alpharetta on the south, Forsyth County on the east and Cherokee County on the north and west, occupying the northern tip of Fulton County. Birmingham, Fields Cross Roads, and Crabapple are former communities within the city limits of Milton. One will find Downtown Atlanta about 31 miles to the south and the Arnold Mill is located on Georgia State Route 140.
